Album Info:
Boulders Beach, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa, August 1, 2007. After our pelagic trip, we took a walk through the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Here the birds are very tame and there is a wooden walkway through the colony. http://www.aboutcapetown.com/ penguins.htm This species is usually treated as a separate species but is sometimes lumped with Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins of South America. Their ranges do not overlap, but they interbreed in captivity and are somewhat similar in appearance. African Penguin is confined to Southern Africa where there are 27 known breeding colonies. It is considered vulnerable because of an annual decline of 2% or more in recent decades. This decline has been attributed to food shortages and environmental changes. Oil spills remain a serious threat. Its vocalizations include a braying call that sounds like donkey, and for this reason, the species is often called the Jackass Penguin (e.g. H&M, Clements, IOC). No subspecies are recognized. Photo is uncropped. Panasonic DMC-LZ5.
